Just Do It

By Jim Voigt

Are you old enough to remember Nike’s winning tag line? Does it even still exist, I don’t know? “Just do it” captures the challenge of pushing into the great unknown. As people, we love predictability because predictability is safe. Some people are geared towards danger. They have a greater tolerance for all of the things that can go wrong when trying something new. They can problem solve on the fly, make adjustments and move ahead. In some ways it’s a disposition for people but in other ways it’s a learned behavior. People that step into it and find a measure of success become more comfortable stepping into it again and again and again.

Many of us have dreams of things we would like to do. Maybe it’s a trip we would like to take or a hobby we would like to begin or a job we would like to do. What is stopping you from fulfilling your dreams? The answer is likely related to a fear of the unknown. In the Bible, this is the story that is at the very beginning of the nation of Israel for the Jewish people. The beginning of Israel is a story about a man named “Abram”. In Genesis 12:1-2, the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” So at the age of 75, Abram just did it. He left a land that he had known his whole life because God called him to something greater.

What is the “greater” thing that God is calling you to? We see from Abram’s story that age doesn’t matter. When God whispers greatness in your ear, you simply have to respond. Over a year ago, I had a desire to help other people benefit from the wisdom of the Enneagram because of how it had helped me. I felt like I was very new in my journey towards greater self-awareness, but I wanted to grow and help others do the same. I went ahead and found a way to attend a certification training and then started advertising that I could teach workshops. People were interested! Then I had to figure out how to teach a workshop? I’ve been teaching workshops for a year now and have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities. With the Coronavirus shutting things down, now I’m trying to figure out how to offer workshops online. The key to “just do it” is to figure out what the first few steps are in achieving your dreams and start on step one. So, what is your dream, or call or idea and what is step one? Start on step one today. Like Abram, greater things are awaiting you!
